APEC Pushes AI Standardization to Balance Innovation and Trade Growth

March 7th 2025

As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly transforms global industries, APEC member economies are working to establish AI standards that ensure interoperability, regulatory alignment, and responsible development. During a recent sub-committee meeting, experts discussed the importance of harmonizing AI frameworks across the region to build trust, reduce complexity for businesses, and support cross-border trade. The discussions also touched on the role of digital conformity assessments, certification systems, and mutual recognition agreements (MRAs) to ease regulatory burdens while fostering AI-driven economic growth.

While proponents argue that AI standardization will promote international cooperation, economic expansion, and safer AI systems, critics caution that excessive regulation may stifle innovation and slow AI adoption. The challenge lies in balancing oversight with the flexibility needed for businesses to compete globally. With an AI Standards Forum set for August, APEC aims to align AI governance with international best practices, ensuring the technology benefits economies while minimizing risks.

APEC economic members include: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), Thailand, United States, Vietnam.
